Remote work: Are you a rock star, or…
Remote work can be extremely challenging. There are distractions everywhere, and the temptation to cut the corners is always there since no one’s watching. On the other hand, for some disciplined people, remote work is an incredible opportunity to shine like a rock star.
Our question today is – which one are you?
If you’re the type of person who is easily distracted, you may think that it will not influence your career path or success. We’ve got bad news for you: it will. Now, if things are going well, this is the perfect opportunity to correct your trajectory before your behaviour lands you in hot water.
One thing that’s certain is that if your superior hasn’t yet noticed that you aren’t giving 100%, they will eventually. If you don’t change your behaviour, it can result in multiple small consequences that will cost you a lot of money. For example:
- Smaller salary increases
- Being passed over for a promotion
- A vacation that won’t be approved
- A dismissal
And obviously, there are more consequences beyond just this list.
Fortunately, making changes to your behaviour now can help rehabilitate a bad reputation. The easiest way to do this is by simply doing the right thing and putting in a bit of extra effort. If you can deliver a bit more than what you’re paid for, you’ll definitely stand out from your peers, even if you started doing it later. We tend to focus on short-term memory, so your recent actions always get the most focus.
If you’re the type of employee that’s already overdelivering, keep doing it! Despite what you’ve done in the past, if you slack off now, that’s what your superior will focus on.
Let’s go!
